Taking an environmentally conscious approach to your bathroom is a great way to save on bills and reduce your footprint.

From choosing showers over baths to switching to energy-saving lighting, discover how to save water and energy in the bathroom here.

1. Fix drips and leaks

Fixing any drips and leaks is a quick and easy way to reduce your water consumption. It may not seem like they waste much water, but drips and leaks can soon add up. 4,000 drips equal 1 litre of water, so if 10 drips leak from your tap every minute, that adds up to 3.6 litres daily!

See our guide to fixing a dripping shower head and find out how to stop leaks.

2. Use cold water

The power of the cold shower is a great way to reduce energy and can benefit your physical and mental health. Hot showers use more energy for heating, so switching to cold (or cooler) water is a straightforward way to reduce energy consumption.

If you love hot showers, using cold water when washing your hands or brushing your teeth is another way to reduce your water heater usage.

3. Turn off the tap

Turn the tap off where possible when washing your hands or brushing your teeth. Turning off the tap every time you brush your teeth can save around 12 litres of water. Assuming you brush your teeth twice daily, that’s 8,760 litres a year!

4. Choose showers over baths

Showers are quicker and more water and energy-efficient than baths. An 8-minute shower uses 62 litres of hot water, 18 litres less than the average bath. So, if you want to save water and energy, showering is the best option. Learn more about the benefits of replacing your bath with a shower.

5. Install energy-saving lighting

.LED bulbs last longer, save energy and can help cut costs as the most efficient light bulbs on the market. Only 5% of the energy that traditional (incandescent) light bulbs use converts to light; the rest is lost to heat. On the other hand, LED lights convert 95% of their energy into light.

6. Use energy-tracking apps

Energy-tracking apps help you track your energy use and offer great insight into your bathroom energy consumption.. You can monitor the cost of your average shower or bath and assess whether you have an energy-efficient shower. This can help you decide whether to consider a more energy-efficient electric shower.

7. Install an energy-efficient showerhead

Switching to an eco showerhead can save around three litres of water a minute. Eco showerheads help conserve water and energy by reducing the flow rate and spray pattern. Aerating eco showerheads add air to the water flow to reduce overall consumption without impacting pressure or your showering experience.

8. Choose a shower with smart technology

Choosing a digital shower that uses smart technology helps save water and energy. You can manage your water and energy usage more effectively with personalised settings and precise controls. Mira Platinum has features that aid water and energy conservation, including an Eco mode and a water usage display. Digital showers can enhance your showering experience and reduce water and energy consumption.
